Opening hours

Overall, the monument is open in the morning and the opening hours and closing hours vary according to the season. The usual start time is 8:30 and the winter finish is usually earlier and the summer finish is usually later (usually not past 19:15). It is always good to record the last entry, which is usually one hour before closing, so that you are not refused at the gate.

To take a specific example based on the official schedule: between 26 October 2025 and 28 February 2026, the Colosseum operates 8:30-16:30, and the last admission is 15:30. The various starting times of the nearby places such as the Roman forum, Palatine hill and Domus Aurea are also indicated within the same page, thus checking each site in case you are combining them together in a single day.

Speaking of closing days, there is one big fixed date that must not be forgotten: the Christmas Day (25 December). New Year may be different: the official site will mention that the park is open on January 1, 2026 (special opening), and thus, you will have to check the holiday hours at the official location.

July and August have the largest crowds, and peak spring breaks; November and February (off holiday) are the least. To be comfortable and to have less queue, select a time slot that is timed in the early morning or at sunset.
